The concept of the Trinity is hard for many people to understand; how can three people be one and one person be three? Yet, this is exactly how the Bible describes God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. There is one God with three divine persons but they are still only one God.
The Trinity is a basic truth of Christianity. There is only one true God, yet He is three Persons—God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We may never understand it, but we know it’s true, so we accept it in faith.
This is seems to be a difficult concept to teach children, but I think they comprehend more than we give them credit for. Did you know if you carefully peel a banana about half way and gently push your fingertip into the top center of the banana, it will separate into three equal parts? Try it, it’s a little messy but fun.
Who is the Trinity?
How can one true God be three Persons? (1) God the Father, (2) Jesus the Son, and (3) the Holy Spirit. Trinity, which means a group of three, describes the mystery of the one true God who is revealed in three Persons. The Trinity is first revealed in the Bible story of Creation. Genesis 1:1 tells us that God created the heavens and the earth. Verse 2 shares that the Holy Spirit was there when the work of Creation began. John 1:1, which is about Jesus, says Jesus was also present with God in the beginning.
How can three be one?
While the members of the Trinity are three distinct Persons, they are One in action and attributes. The three members of the Trinity are always in agreement. Jesus will never disagree with God the Father or the Holy Spirit. Anything One of them does is agreed upon by all. They are God—three but One. They are the Trinity, the one true God.
